How to connect a weighing scale to your ERP or production system

A plain-English path from the indicator on the shop floor to SAP, Oracle, Dynamics or an MES.

2026-10-06

  1. Indicator
  2. Connector
  3. ERP

Two systems that do not speak

The indicator shows a weight. The ERP holds orders, materials and invoices. Between them there is often a person with a keyboard. That person is the integration.

Connecting the scale means reading the indicator, adding the business context (which order, which vehicle, which batch), and posting a clean event the ERP or MES can accept.

Start at the indicator, not the ERP

Find how the indicator already outputs data. Common options are RS232, RS485, TCP/IP and Modbus. You do not need new firmware if that output exists.

A connector reads that stream, turns it into a standard payload, and sends it over a secure API. If the network drops, store-and-forward keeps the readings until the link returns.

Then decide what the ERP should receive

A raw kilogram is rarely enough. Purchasing wants a goods receipt against a purchase order. Production wants a quantity against a process order. Dispatch wants a net weight against a delivery.

Scope the match: which field on the weigh record maps to which ERP object. That is the work that makes posting reliable. The protocol is the easy part once the match is clear.

Alerts before dashboards

If a line goes quiet, or a weight sits outside a limit, someone should hear about it. Email or SMS on those events is often more useful than a colourful screen that nobody opens.

Dashboards can come later. First make sure the event exists, is time-stamped, and can be retried if the ERP is briefly down.

A sensible first project

Pick one indicator and one destination: MES, ERP or a file the business already trusts. Agree the fields. Run it in parallel with the old method until both sides see the same numbers.

Do not promise every plant on day one. One working connector teaches you the mapping. The next sites copy it.

A 30-minute call is enough to start if you can name the indicator, the destination system, and the document you want created: a goods receipt, a process-order confirmation, or a dispatch note. We will tell you whether the first build is a connector, an operator screen, or both.

If you want a bounded first project, use one site and one workflow, with a written success test such as “the weight posts without a clerk typing it.” Hardware stays yours. Software is what we supply.
